What does leading look like at ArtsED Washington?

As a grassroots organization, ArtsED Washington invites leadership in a variety of ways. Common roles are Board Members, Community Ambassadors, and Project-Based Volunteers. To encourage representation throughout Washington, these roles all include remote and/or hybrid opportunities!

Project-based volunteers

For the person who wants to contribute in a focused way with a short-term commitment. Apply at any time of year for a variety of short-term projects– either in person or on-line.
—Any number of hours per month or quarter—

*Project-based volunteers may apply at any time of year for a variety of short-term projects– both in person and on-line. Some examples include stuffing envelopes for mass mailings, photographing our events, revising materials for online posts, researching new advocacy resources, assisting with planning a special event, etc. Reach out if you don’t yet see a project that matches your interests and skill set! The volunteer program is great for the person who wants to contribute in a focused way with a short-term commitment.

Community-based Ambassadors

For the volunteer who wants to support equitable arts education in their community, strengthen their local network, and establish a deeper connection with ArtsEd Washington.
—Approximately 1 virtual meeting or asynchronous
online conversation per month—

*Community-based Ambassadors are likely already connected with at least one area of arts, education, or equity work in their region, and they will serve as a liaison between the artistic and/or education community and AEW. Each month, ambassadors will share (via video meeting or via asynchronous on-line communications) the recent needs/opportunities/celebrations in their community and learn about those from other ambassadors throughout the state. These communications will help us identify trends and priorities to share with the public and with decision-makers throughout the state! Ambassadors serve for approximately one year at a time, and also help share AEW’s resources with their community as needed! The Ambassador program is a great opportunity for the volunteer who wants to actively support equitable arts education in their community, strengthen their network, and establish a deeper connection with ArtsEd Washington.

Board of Directors

For the leader who wants to deepen their understanding of equity and arts throughout Washington schools, to expand their networking with other regional leaders, and

guide equity efforts that will impact arts education at the local, regional, and statewide level.
—Usually 1 virtual meeting with some asynchronous online conversations each month —

*Board Members are leaders who volunteer their time and expertise to oversee the successful implementation of ArtsEd Washington’s Mission. Through monthly video meetings and occasional special events in person, Board Members actively engage in Strategic Planning, Organization Development, Advocacy-based Programming, Community Engagement & PR, Financial Oversight, and Fundraising. To reduce the monetary obstacle that often limits diversity on Boards, we do not require large membership fees. Rather, Board Members support the organization's financial sustainability through a combination of methods: providing hands-on time to support fundraising efforts, procuring financial support through their networks, and making regular financial contributions that are personally meaningful to them. Board members serve terms of approximately 2 years, with a monthly average of 3 hours for AEW meetings and asynchronous communications, and occasionally up to 6 hours for special events and representation in their own community. Board Membership is a great opportunity for the volunteer who wants to expand their networking with other regional leaders, to deepen their understanding of equity and arts in Washington schools, and support equity efforts that will impact arts education at the regional and statewide level.

At ArtsEd Washington, we believe that diversity enriches our organization and makes us more effective in achieving our mission of providing equitable arts education to students throughout Washington State.

We are committed to equal opportunity inclusion regardless of race, creed, color, national origin, citizenship or immigration status, marital status, families with children (including pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions), sex, sexual orientation, gender identity diversity, age, status as a protected veteran, honorably discharged veteran or military status, status as an individual with the presence of any sensory, mental, or physical disability or the use of a trained dog guide or service animal by a person with disabilities or other applicable legally protected characteristics. We encourage individuals of all backgrounds, identities, and locations throughout Washington State to join us in advocating for equitable arts education.
