What does leading
look like at Arts ED Washington?

As a grassroots non-profit, ArtsED Washington invites leadership in a variety of ways. Common roles are Board Members, Community Ambassadors, and Project-Based Volunteers. To encourage representation throughout Washington, these roles all include remote and/or hybrid opportunities! Most positions meet once monthly.

Project-based volunteers

Project-based Volunteers can apply at any time of year:
-For a variety of short-term projects
-Either in person or on-line, depending on the project
-Any number of hours per week or project

*Project-based volunteers serve unique and important purposes!
Each volunteer’s schedule is discussed and mutually agreed upon to ensure it serves the individual as well as the organization. Some projects are completed in a month; others continue for a year. Past projects have included reviewing learning standards in our curriculum, updating the AEW website, creating project artwork, editing content for publication, stuffing envelopes, event-specific fundraising or photography, researching advocacy resources, etc. The volunteer program is a great way to support AEW’s mission with a short-term commitment.

Reach out if you don’t yet see a project that matches your interests and skill set! AEW will respond regarding next steps within approximately 1 week.

Community Ambassadors

Community Ambassadors are often connected with
local arts, education, or equity work such as:

-School employee or retiree
-College student studying arts and/or education
-Parent/guardian of a student who loves the arts
-Professional who partners with local school programs

Community Ambassadors serve as a liaison between AEW and
their local artistic and/or education communities by:
-Sharing about their community with other Ambassadors
-Learning how to support quality arts education in their schools
-Expanding their local network
-Attending 1 virtual meeting or asynchronous conversation per month
-Establishing a deeper connection with ArtsEd Washington

These contributions help us identify trends and priorities
to guide our programming
and inform decision-makers across the state! Ambassadors serve for
approximately one year at a time, and are welcome to continue in future roles as well.

Board
of
Directors

Board members are often leaders with knowledge and skills such as:
-Advocacy and systems change
-Community engagement and PR
-Educational leadership
-Financial oversight and fundraising
-Organizational development

Board Members volunteer their time and expertise to:
-Ensure the successful implementation of AEW’s Mission
-Engage in Organizational Development, Regional Advocacy,
Community Engagement & PR, Financial Oversight, and Fundraising.
-Deepen their understanding of equity and arts in our schools
-Impact arts education at the regional and statewide level
-Attend 1 virtual meeting or asynchronous conversation per month
-Expand their networking with other regional leaders

To reduce the monetary obstacle that often limits diversity on Boards,
AEW does not require large membership fees. Rather, Board Members support the organization's financial sustainability through a combination of methods: providing hands-on time to support fundraising efforts, procuring financial support through their networks, and making regular financial contributions that are personally meaningful to them. Board members serve terms of approximately 2 years, with a monthly average of 3 hours for AEW meetings and asynchronous communications, and occasionally up to 5 hours for special events and representation in their own community.
