Principal, Carnation Elementary School
Riverview School District
Doug Poage has been an educator for the past 20 years and is currently the principal of Carnation Elementary School in the Riverview School District (Carnation, WA). Prior to that, Doug taught almost all elementary grade levels at rural, inner city, and magnet school programs across the country. The arts have been Doug’s passion since his childhood, where he was introduced to musical theatre in the 2nd grade. Over the years, Doug has been part of over dozens of musical or theatrical productions as an amateur and professional including a recent stint in the Cascade Community Theatre’s Production of “A Christmas Carol,” where he played Bob Cratchit.
Now, Doug enjoys infusing the arts into the elementary curriculum and helping teachers bring learning alive through the arts despite the high-stakes testing culture we live in. An active participant in the ArtsEd Washington Principals’ Arts Leadership program from 2005 to 2008, Doug led a school arts team to develop a School Arts Plan that continues to be implemented. Over the past four years, he has successfully written and received close to $100,000 in grants for the arts in his school and district. In addition, Doug has served as a panelist for the National Endowment for the Arts and has presented at local, state, and national conferences.
