Congratulations to our friends and partners at 4Culture, whose future became ensured with the passing of SB 5834, a bill that allocates public funding for local arts and heritage communities. For over twenty years, 4Culture has provided support for the visual and performing arts, public art, heritage programs, cultural development of the region, and more. Without the passage of this bill, 90% of 4Culture’s programs and support for arts would have been eliminated by 2012.
“This victory is a bright spot during these trying economic times…In the previous economic crisis, the Great Depression, President Franklin D. Roosevelt recognized the importance of the arts not just as potential economic generators and job creators, but as the sustenance to the soul that would see Americans through the struggles they were facing,” said Washington State Senator Edward Murray in a message. “His creation of the Works Progress Administration, which created hundreds of jobs through public arts programs, demonstrated his commitment to this ideal. By continuing the funding of arts and heritage programs through this bill, we can show ours.”
The passing of this bill ensures the presence of the arts in our future. ArtsEd Washington would like to thank the Washington state legislators for their dedication to our community, in which the arts are valued and cultivated.
