As Director of Arts Education and Curriculum Integration for Bethel School District, a position held since the fall of 2002, Michael works closely with classroom teachers and arts specialists to ensure the integration of the arts into all aspects of learning. Prior to this appointment Michael was an elementary principal for seven years, and a music specialist for 20 years.  He is a past president of the Washington Alliance for Arts Education (ArtsEd Washington), as well as several Washington State committees supported by the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction.  Michael has led staff development sessions on the Washington State Classroom-Based Performance Assessments at various conferences and workshops across the state.  The Washington Library Media Association named him Supervisor of the Year in 2005, the Mountain Region from the Washington Music Educators Association recognized him with the Friends of Music Award in 2006 and 2010, and Governor Christine Gregoire honored him with the Governor’s Arts and Heritage Award in 2007. 

Michael received his Bachelor’s in Music Education from the University of Northern Colorado in 1975, and his Master’s in Educational Administration from Central Washington University in 1992. He and his wife Susan have been married since 1974 and reside in Lakewood, Washington. Their three grown sons are David (El Paso, Texas), Brian (Spokane, Washington), and Matthew (McGuire AFB, New Jersey).  The joy of their life are their two granddaughters: Hailey and April.
