CALL TO ACTION: Survey Your School Board Candidates Before Ballots are Cast

Election Day is November 8, 2011.

School Board positions are probably the elected office most likely to have a direct impact on you, your family, and the kids in your neighborhood.

Help inform your fellow voters before they ink in their ballots by surveying your local School Board candidates on key issues around arts education by Friday, October 21.

It’s not too late to find out where they stand on arts education and ensure we’re electing the individuals that will make the best educational decisions.

The timeframe to get out the surveys is short, so we encourage you to act quickly.

How to survey your candidates and share responses

To make it easy to connect with the candidates, we have developed a short survey and introductory language that you can paste into an email or set up on an online survey - using an online software tool such as Survey Monkey or Zoomerang.

Partnering with your municipal arts commission or local arts agency is ideal for survey dissemination, information collection, and effective sharing of responses.

Additionally, large educational organizations such as the PTA are ideal outlets to contact with a request share candidate responses. They have a vast statewide network and are equipped to effectively distribute information. We also invite you to send us a link to your survey responses and we’ll share them with the community.

Important Planning Dates

  • ASAP: Secure local arts agency or PTA partnership.
  • Week of Oct. 10: Send questionnaire to candidates. Request responses by Friday, October 21.
  • October 19-21: Ballots released to post offices.
  • October 20-23: Ballots received in homes. Completed ballots must be postmarked by Election Day.
  • October 24: Format and begin sharing responses. This is two weeks prior to the general election. Ideally, the candidate responses should be shared with the community as close as possible to when ballots will arrive in the mail.
  • October 25: Share Candidates’ responses on a blog post, website, in an eNewsletter, on Facebook, and with ArtsEd Washington.

Stay connected post-election

We encourage you to continue your outreach efforts after the election by engaging with your newly elected (and existing) School Board members. Educate them on the importance of the arts in a complete education. It is vital that they hear this expectation being articulated regularly by their community. Because a great place to start is at the beginning, we will be developing a School Board Welcome Packet that you can bring along to one of the first School Board meetings and present to each of the new School Directors. We’ll be sharing more information soon.

  • “The arts can open pathways of learning and encourage confidence in children. One of our fourth grade students has been visibly touched by the arts. She started the year hesitant to make new friends – uncomfortable to share orally with her class. Through her exposure to the arts, she smiles during dance activities and is starting to speak to adults – expressively.”
