“The Kennedy Center supports this work because it engages the primary school leader and decision maker in planning arts programs… The [PAL] program design includes networking opportunities for principals so they can share best practices across school sites. Few initiatives provide such a high level of sustained support for principals.”
Barbara Shepherd,
Director of National Partnerships for The Kennedy Center

It’s a Win for Students: State Board of Education Approves Increased Arts Requirements for High School Graduation
It’s a win for every student and every school as the Washington State Board of Education (SBE) approved new provisional high school graduation requirements, including an increase in arts requirements. The Board’s decision helped culminate a week-long national celebration of the arts, as schools, students, and communities across the nation celebrated National Arts In Education Week–September 12-18.
ArtsEd Washington has closely followed the progression of the SBE’s work, and their meaningful high school diploma process. Executive Director Una McAlinden consistently represented you throughout the process, highlighting the support of ArtsEd Washington and its members to include the increased arts requirement as part of a balanced and equitable curriculum.
Following last week’s meeting, ArtsEd Washington issued a Press Release expressing our appreciation of the State Board leadership.
A two-page handout illustrating the new requirements can be found here.
