First Look: National Center for Education Statistics Examines Arts Education in Schools

The U.S. Department of Education’s National Center for Education Statistics released a snapshot report on the national status and condition of arts education in schools during the 2009-2010 school year.  Some of the First Look findings include:

  • Most of the elementary school’s offered instruction that was designated for music (94%) and visual arts (83%)
  • Of those elementary schools, 93% that offered music and 85% that offered visual arts  provided instruction at least once a week
  • Of secondary schools in the 2008-2009 school year,  91% offered music, 89% offered visual art, 12% offered dance, and 45% offered theater

It has been 10 years since this snapshot report has been done.  The full report is due at the end of 2011 and will be compared to the findings from the 1999-2000 report where applicable.
